Earlier this year, Ofgem announced 40 new projects that will mark a significant improvement in energy network innovation. This will help accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero, at the lowest cost to consumers. These projects will explore new innovations for gas and electricity networks. The central aim is to put consumers first and help transform the UK’s energy systems, in line with net zero targets.
The projects are the first to be given the go-ahead under Ofgem’s new Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) partnership with Innovate UK. They are set to address some of the biggest challenges that energy networks currently face in their route to net zero.
Let’s take a look at some of the main aspects of these projects.
Low emission transport
Ofgem has indicated that heat, data and digitalisation are integral to the funding scheme. Whole system integration and low emission transport will also be key. And the timing couldn’t be more apt – in 2019, transport produced 27% of the UK’s total emissions. It is therefore becoming increasingly urgent that we find alternatives to emissions fuelled resources.
A number of these projects focus on hydrogen’s potential as an energy source, mainly of using hydrogen to power heavy-duty vehicles. A toolkit is also in development, to help planners understand how gas and electricity networks could decarbonise our railways. A shift towards hydrogen powered transport could significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality – and most importantly, accelerate the energy sector towards its net zero goals.
Encouraging low carbon energy
The innovations currently being explored are wide-ranging. They include technologies and approaches for the large-scale storage of heat. Circuit breakers could enable more power from offshore wind turbines to be connected to the grid.
These projects encourage businesses and individuals to embrace low-carbon energy. This could involve updating equipment, or switching to renewable sources. In particular, the heating industry has a real need for low-carbon alternatives. This sector contributes significantly to the UK’s emissions levels. Ofgem is looking at projects that aim to reduce emissions within heating are incredibly important in keeping everything running towards a more sustainable future.
Carbon management is vital for businesses within the energy sector that are looking to reduce emissions and reach net zero. Our in-house carbon specialists are well-versed in complex energy reporting and legislation. We can provide everything, from preliminary guidance and support, to total management of your net zero strategy. Get in touch to find out more.
Data and digitalisation
Data management is becoming more and more essential within the energy sector, and harnessing data can lead to enhanced insights for consumers and potential investors. Ofgem is encouraging better use of data to modernise regulated activities, including a number of projects within the funding scheme.
Through a greater use of data, Ofgem hope for increased transparency. And this can be seen through the funding of relevant projects, as well as setting up the Energy Data Taskforce. The taskforce was created to push for digitisation of Britain’s energy system. In turn helping to deliver better services for consumers.
